COIL Experiences

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is a modality of curriculum internationalization that promotes online, collaborative learning in an international context.

In practice, COIL works as follows:

  • A faculty member from one university, in partnership with a faculty member from an international institution, designs an online teaching program for their respective classes. This results in two universities, two instructors, and two groups of students—possibly involving two languages and at least two cultural contexts. A course or module is co-taught by the partner instructors, with activities developed in a virtual environment in a cooperative, intercultural, and interdisciplinary manner.
