UFSC is the second Brazilian university which receives the most PEC-G students
On 21 July 2023, the announcement ceremony for the Selection Process for PEC-G Undergraduate students for the year 2024 took place at the Ministry of Education, in Brasília, with online streaming.
In this edition, the Program – which enables students from 70 partner countries (11 from South America; 15 from North America, Central America and the Caribbean; 29 from Africa, 9 from Asia and 6 from Europe) to complete their undergraduate studies free of charge in Brazilian universities – will offer more than 6,000 places in 342 undergraduate programs from 102 institutions. Applications for the program are free and must be carried out at a Brazilian diplomatic or consular representation of one of the PEC-G participating countries, according to the Call for Applications nº 5/2023, which establishes the opening of the application period and other procedures related to the selection process. The applications deadline is 18 August 2023.
During the announcement ceremony, the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) was featured as the second Brazilian university to receive the highest number of PEC-G students between 2008 and 2023, only behind Universidade de São Paulo (USP) among all institutions participating in the Program. Regarding the number of graduated students, UFSC comes third, with 333 graduated students in total.
The PEC-G is one of the most important international cooperation programs for UFSC and dialogues directly with one of the fundamental axes and one of the priorities of the internationalization policy, namely: “Expanding the culture, horizons and perspectives of internationalization towards multilateralism and multilingualism, with a view to international solidarity and academic excellence” and “Strengthening relations with the Global-South”.
For Prof. Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, Secretary for International Relations,
“The presence of PEC-G students at UFSC brings diversity of cultures and languages. It brings important learning to Brazilian students, who become aware of other social contexts through the interaction with these students. For our faculty members it is also a learning experience to interact with students who can approach topics from a different perspective. It is important to emphasize that Brazil provides significant solidarity to countries and peoples that do not yet have a consolidated higher education system. PEC-G students must return to their country to receive their diploma, and must carry out their professional career there. Likewise, PEC-PG students (graduate students), who are granted a scholarship by CNPq (Master´s degree) or CAPES (Doctorate). We have already had students at UFSC who later went on to become ministers of state in their country. The PEC-G and PEC-PG Program is of great importance to UFSC, and has been able to fulfill its fundamental objectives of training professionals to contribute to the economic and social development of their countries of origin”.
In 2023, there is a total of 75 PEC-G students at UFSC, from 22 different partner countries (45 from Africa; 29 from Latin America and the Caribbean and 1 from Asia). The students are distributed among the five UFSC´s campuses: 59 in Florianópolis; 11 in Joinville; 2 in Araranguá; 2 in Curitibanos; and 1 in Blumenau. In the Schools of the Florianopolis campus, the students are enrolled as follows: 21 in the CTC (School of Technology) ; 13 in the CCS (School of Health and Schiences), 11 in the CSE (School of Scio-Economic Sciences), 6 in the CCE (School of Communication and Arts), 3 in the CCA (School of Agricultural Sciences), 2 in the CCJ (School of Law), 1 in the CCB (School of Bioloical Sciences), 1 in the CDS (School of Sports) and 1 in the CED (School of Education).
