UFSC rises in ranking of universities worldwide

The Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) is the 7th best university in Brazil and the 4th among Brazilian federal universities, according to the THE World University Rankings, a set of rankings elaborated annually and considered one of the most comprehensive, balanced and reliable in the world. For the 2020 edition, 1,396 institutions from 92 different countries were analyzed. In the overall ranking, UFSC was placed in the 601-800 band, meaning a variation up to 200 positions in relation to the 2019 edition, in which the university was placed in the 801-1000 band.

The THE World University Rankings are produced by Times Higher Education (THE), a British magazine that publishes news and articles related to higher education. To evaluate the universities, 13 performance indicators are used, grouped into five areas: Teaching, Research, Citations, International Outlook and Industry Income.

The University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, is the best ranked university in the world, followed by the California Institute of Technology, USA, in 2nd place and University of Cambridge, also in the United Kingdom, in 3rd place. In the top 10, all institutions are British or American.

In total, 46 Brazilian universities appear in the ranking. The Universidade de São Paulo (USP) is the best ranked one, placed in the 250-300 band. Among the federal universities – 26 in total, UFSC is ranked in 4th place.
