Ementa: Emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization processes are versatile processes for obtaining submicrometric polymeric particles with a variety of applications, ranging from latex for paper and cellulose to polymeric nanoparticles used for controlled release of drugs. The polymers obtained via emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization are products defined by the process, what means that their properties are determined during the polymerization process. The focus of this course is on the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization, what allows manipulating the process conditions in order to optimize the process and obtain new products with improved qualities.

Ementa: Overview of the development of new green sustainable processes based on the use of compressed fluids and focused on the replacement of toxic solvents for green solvents with lower environmental impact; moreover, aspects related to the design of new biorefinery processes and the intensification and integration of processes will be discussed for the extraction of bioactives from natural sources (such as plants, algae, food by-products, among others). Fundamentals of different advanced analytical techniques including new sample preparation processes such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), solid-phase extraction (SPE) and solidphase microextraction (SPME); chromatographic techniques such as liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC), and their multidimensional approaches (LCxLC, GCxGC) will be also covered, as well as their hyphenation to mass spectrometry.
