On 14 December, the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) welcomed representatives from the Consulate-General of Japan to its main campus in Florianópolis. The meeting took place at the Office of International Relations (SINTER/UFSC) and was attended by the Secretary for International Relations, Professor Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, the International Relations Professor Iara Costa Leite and the student Thomas Placido, a member of the Japanese Studies Center (NEJAP) at UFSC. Representing the consulate were the Vice-Consul of Japan Misaki Shoji and the Consulate’s Cultural Advisor Akemi Ferreira.

At the meeting, they discussed the possibility of furthering UFSC’s cooperation with Japanese universities, especially with regard to scholarships for graduate studies in Japan (Study in Japan). UFSC currently has agreements with three Japanese universities: Fukuoka University, University of Tokyo, and Chukyo University.

In addition to the meeting, representatives of the Consulate-General of Japan gave a lecture on Diplomacy and Exchange in Japan, as well as on the intercultural exchanges between Japan and Brazil. The event, held at the School of Socio-Economic Sciences (CSE) Auditorium on the Trindade Campus, discussed the history and future prospects of Japan-Brazil relations and the demand for intercultural exchange between the two geographically and culturally distant countries.

On 15 December, Professor Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, accompanied by the head of Translation Service at SINTER Luciana Miashiro Lima and the student Thomas Placido, attended the celebration of the 220^th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in Brazil, which took place at the Santana Fort in Florianópolis.

The Research with International Students Conference was held on 11 and 12 December in a hybrid format (online and in-person) at the University of Manchester (UK). The event sought to develop more methodological guidance to steer this subfield away from problematic discourses and assumptions, through presentations dealing with the following issues: critical conceptual and methodological issues currently faced by research with international students; practical (macro or micro) considerations for research in this subfield; issues of power, inequality, intersectionality and ethics in research with international students; how research with international students might be imagined differently; and what the future of research with international students should look like.

Based on this, the SINTEGRA project – a partnership between the Office of International Relations (SINTER/UFSC) and the Department of Psychology at UFSC – delivered a presentation entitled “SINTEGRA as an initiative to integrate international students from the Global South into a Brazilian public university“. They presented the Programa de Estudantes-Convênio de Graduação (PEC-G), how the project works, its objectives and the ongoing actions. The presentation was prepared by the Director of International Relations Fernanda Leal, the head of PEC-G at UFSC Elisa Freitas Schemes, the SINTEGRA coordinator Elka Lima Hostensky, and the psychology professor Lígia Rocha. The presentation was also attended by Paula Eduarda Michels, English/Portuguese translator and interpreter at SINTER.

The Universidade Federal Santa Catarina (UFSC) will have special opening hours between 18 December 2023 and 23 February 2024. During this period, the working hours for faculty and staff will be from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm, as established by the Normative Ordinance no. 480/2023/GR, which implements summer time at the institution. The exception is 14 February 2024 (Ash Wednesday), when office hours will be from 2 pm to 6 pm.

This measure takes into account the principles of reasonableness, economy and efficiency, by which federal higher education institutions in Brazil establish special opening hours. The Normative Ordinance no. 480/2023/GR does not apply to university units providing essential services to the community, in which regular office hours will be kept.
