The Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) occupies the 10th position in the Times Higher Education (THE) Latin America University Rankings 2024, moving up two positions from last year, when it was in the 12th position. With this new ranking, the institution is now one of the top 10 universities in Latin America.
The achievement is registered as a milestone in UFSC´s ranking in higher education in Latin America.
The Latin America University Rankings evaluates the universities according to performance indicators that covers five areas:
-
teaching (learning environment);
-
research environment (volume, income and reputation);
-
research quality (research strength, research excellence and research influence);
-
international outlook (staff, students and research); and
-
industry (income and patents).
Comparing to the other universities, UFSC stood out in two of these areas: Industry, which was ranked among the six (6) best universities, and Research Environment, placed among the eight (8) best universities.
In its 9th edition, the Latin America University Rankings adjusted the perfomance indicators for the first time to reflect specific characteristics of the region. This year, they included three new metrics to assess research quality: research strength; research excellence; and research influence. So far, the citation impact by area of knowledge was the only metric used to evaluate the success on research.
Overall, 32 universities, out of the 69 Brazilian universities ranked, improved their positions. According to the THE, the changes in the ranking methodology contributed to Brazil’s success, by providing a more accurate picture of the research quality of the universities.
