The Office of International Relations (SINTER) announces to the university community the publication of the 2024 catalogue of courses offered in foreign languages, for both undergraduate and graduate students, at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). These courses are interdisciplinary in nature and within a large scope of subject areas that comprise arts and humanities; life sciences; engineering and technology; clinical, pre-clinical and health; education; exact sciences; and human sciences.

UFSC mantains parnerships with more than 300 higher education institutions all over the world and the university believes that having these courses available in other languages is important for meeting its internationalization policy, since it provides a more open space for international learning and for welcoming the foreign academic community into the institution.

Registration is now open for the extension course: Welcome and integration of foreign students at UFSC. The aim of the course is to offer foreign students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in 2024.1 with the basic knowledge of the Portuguese language to enhance their academic experience at UFSC. This introductory course offers a practical and reflective study of communication strategies in the academic environment.

The Office of International Relations (SINTER) held a Welcome Session for the International Community, on 11 March, for international students arriving at UFSC for the first semester of 2024. The event took place at the Bosque da Ilha Auditorium, located at the UFSC Culture and Events Center, on Trindade Campus, in Florianópolis.

The Rector, Prof. Irineu Manoel de Souza, the Prorector for Undergraduate Students and Basic Education (PROGRAD), Prof. Dilceane Carraro, the Internationalization Coordinator of the Prorectorate for Graduate Studies (PROPG), Amália Borges Dário, and the Director of Internationalization, Prof. André Ramos, welcomed the students.

In addition to welcoming the students, the event included the presentation of important information about UFSC to the newcomers, and specific guidance to the groups. The schedule also encompassed two cultural moments: the first one with the recitation of the poem “Ser imigrante” [Being an immigrant], written by Richardson Yonel Civil, from Haiti, UFSC medicine student and member of the Associação des Jeunes Haitiens en Sciences de la Santé -AJHASS [Association of Young Haitians in Health Science]; and the second moment, during the coffee break, with the performance by the group Bateria Universitária Devassa da Associação Atlética Acadêmica de Medicina da UFSC [Student percussion band “Devassa” of UFSC Medicine Student Athletic Association].

On 29 February, the Secretary for International Relations at UFSC, Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, attended a dinner held at the official residence of the Consulate of Japan, in Curitiba.

The event was organized in celebration of the birthday of His Majesty Naruhito, Japanese emperor, who turned 64 on 23 February. Naruhito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne on 1 May 2019, marking the beginning of the Reiwa era, following the abdication of his father, Akihito. He is the 126^th monarch, following the traditional order of succession in Japan. The 1947 constitution defines the title of Emperor of Japan as the “symbol of the State and the unity of the people”, and the Imperial Household Law governs the line of imperial succession.

The Secretary for International Relations at UFSC attended the commemorative event at the invitation of the Consul General of Japan in Curitiba, Yasuhiro Mitsui. Also present on the occasion were the Vice Consul of Japan Misaki Shoji and the Consulate’s Cultural Advisor Akemi Ferreira, who were both at UFSC last year, meeting with the Secretary at SINTER to discuss issues relating to cooperative relations between UFSC and Japanese universities. At that time, they also gave a lecture on Diplomacy and Exchange in Japan, held in the CSE Auditorium on Trindade Campus.

Scholarships in Japan for Brazilian students

The Japanese Government, through its Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), announced that, this year, five scholarships will be offered to Brazilian students at Japanese universities. This is a unique opportunity for those who want to further their studies in Japan.
