To further strengthen the collaboration between UBC, the Applied Ethology Laboratory (LETA) at UFSC and other Brazilian institutions, professors Daniel M. Weary and Marina A. G. von Keyserlingk have returned to Brazil for a visit. Together with Professors Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho and Maria José Hötzel, the Canadian professors will interact with other Brazilian research groups in the area of Applied Ethology and Animal Welfare.

As an example of this interaction, the hybrid course “Animal Behavior and Welfare” is being held jointly with the Graduate Program in Agroecosystems at UFSC between 16 and 17 March. The course is taught in English by professors Daniel M. Weary and Marina A. G. von Keyserlingk, from UBC, Luiz C. Pinheiro Machado Filho and Maria J. Hötzel, from UFSC, and Ruan Daros, from PUC-PR, with 57 students from these institutions enrolled.

Although the agreement has been signed recently, the collaboration between LETA at UFSC and the Animal Welfare Program (AWP) at UBC has been going on since 2002. This collaboration has also produced dozens of joint publications, undergraduate projects, master’s thesis and doctoral dissertations.
