The Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER) has launched the second edition of the English course “Written Production in English – Abstracts”. Registrations are open from 4 July to 17 July 2022 (register here).

At the end of the course, students will be able to recognize the main characteristics of the genre abstract; identify the discursive and lexical-systemic characteristics of the genre; contrast types of abstract considering language and subject area; and produce abstracts.

The course totals 16 hours and will be held online through the Moodle Groups platform, featuring synchronous meetings and asynchronous assessments.

Attention: Intermediate knowledge of English – at B1, B2 or C1 level – is recommended to attend the course.

Last Wednesday, 29 June, the Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT) was inaugurated in the Rectorate Building II. The inauguration event was attended by UFSC’s Rector Ubaldo Cesar Balthazar, the Vice-Rector Catia Regina Silva de Carvalho Pinto, the Secretary for International Relations Lincoln Fernandes, the Director of International Relations Diogo Robl, the NILT Coordinator Silvana Gaspari, SINTER staff and representatives from the Foundation for Socioeconomic Studies and Research (FEPESE), the Prorectorate for Outreach (PROEX) and the Office of Distance Education (SEAD).

NILT was created to promote the internationalization process of UFSC, through the development of language policies and language courses with an international focus. Currently, the Center offers language courses aimed at students and at faculty and staff training. The classes are taught in English, Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL), French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The activities started remotely during the pandemic and will now also be carried out in-person. NILT’s objectives also include the development of translation activities and the administration of proficiency exams, which are still under implementation.

Registrations are again open for the course “Exámenes de certificación en español: acercamiento” [Getting familiar with Spanish proficiency exams] offered by the Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER). Register here until 10 July.

The course introduces four Spanish proficiency exams (CELU, DELE, SIELE and LEPLE (DLLE/UFSC)), whose certificates are the most required for academic mobility and admission to graduate programs. The objective is to familiarize participants with the exam formats, the types of questions, the skills assessed, the time for completion, the assignment of grades/scores and the conditions of offer and validity of the exams.

Classes will take place online, through the Moodle Groups platform, on the following dates:

• Week 1 (6 and 8 July): CELU;
• Week 2 (13 and 15 July): SIELE;
• Week 3 (20 and 22 July): DELE;
• Week 4 (27 and 29 July): LEPLE (DLLE/UFSC);
• 1 August – 5 August: overall feedback and course closure.

Attention: participants must have knowledge of the Spanish language (at least written and oral comprehension skills), as the entire course (classes, materials and activities) will be in Spanish.

The University of Birmingham (UoB) and UFSC promote virtual lectures to discuss topics in the field of Language and Literary Studies. The focus of this edition, to take place on 29 June, at 10 am (Brasilia time),  is “Corpus-Based Approaches to Literary Texts”.

The event will feature two lectures: one by Prof. Michaela Mahlberg, from UoB, who will address the topic “CLiC – Between Close and Distant Reading” and the other by Prof. Lincoln Fernandes, from UFSC, who will discuss “Sentiment Analysis in the Translation of Children’s Fantasy Literature”.

Start date: immediately

Total hours per week: 20 hours

Work hours: 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Remuneration: R$ 787.98 monthly (plus R$ 220.00 as transportation vouchers)

Requirements:

• enrollment in the 2nd semester of studies or beyond;
• no course failure due to unsatisfactory attendance (FI);
• fluency in English (knowledge of other languages is desirable, but not required);
• excellent writing skills;
• ease in operating administrative systems;
• teamwork skills;
• organization, responsibility, initiative and punctuality;
• basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive and Google Forms.

Internship duties:

Assist in administrative tasks related to the Incoming Exchange Program: serving the university community and the public in general in Portuguese and in English; contacting foreign partner institutions; operating e-mails and administrative systems, updating spreadsheets, and other activities pertaining to International Programs.

The Office of International Relations (SINTER) announces the final results of the selection processs for faculty mobility through the Escala Docente Program of the Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo (AUGM), according to the Call for Applications 07 SINTER 2022:

On 13 and 14 June 2022, SINTER promoted training for UFSC’s Florianópolis Campus internationalization agents. The nomination of such agents is an initiative that aims to socialize the knowledge of procedures relating to the university internationalization, especially with regard to serving the national and international UFSC community. The training intends to prepare the agents with the necessary practices to clarify questions and contribute to the compreheensive internationalization at UFSC.
