Introduction to Brazilian Portuguese – Level A1

The Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER) is promoting the course “Introdução ao Português brasileiro – Nível A1” [Introduction to Brazilian Portuguese – Level A1] for foreign students, researchers and professors who need an introduction to the Portuguese language. The classes will be online and self-instructional. Registrations will be open from 30 September to 12 November 2022.

The aim is to enable participants to master the structures, expressions and sentences of everyday use, allowing them to communicate in a simple way, introduce themselves and others, ask questions and give answers about personal aspects and their surroundings. The course will present elements of the Brazilian culture through texts related to the content being learned and through famous MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) songs.

The course totals 20 hours and a certificate will be provided to the participants who complete all mandatory activities and achieve the performance required for its completion. Classes will take place from 7 to 21 November.

SINTER visits UFSC Academic Schools and Campuses this month

The Secretary Luiz Carlos Pinheiro visited Curitibanos Campus this Tuesday.

The Office of International Relations (SINTER) has begun in September a schedule of visits to all UFSC Academic Schools and Campuses. The visits aim to encourage the university internationalization process at the Schools, presenting our office’s main activities and its general and priority actions for the next years. It also aims to be a moment for actively listening to each school’s needs. The Secretary for International Relations, Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, the Director of International Relations, Fernanda Leal, and SINTER staff members will meet with the Heads of Departments and Coordinators of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs. This week, the visit was to the Curitibanos Campus.

UFSC receives QS award and is ranked the 23rd best university in Latin America

The results of the QS World University Rankings: Latin America 2023 were published on Thursday, 22 September, and ranked the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) among the 23 best universities in Latin America. UFSC occupies the 8th position among the Brazilian universities and the 4th among the federal education institutions in Brazil.

The ranking is produced annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British company specialized in education. The ranking analyzed 428 institutions in 20 Latin American countries and at the top of the list is the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC). The overall score of each institution is calculated using eight metrics, each with a different weight: Academic Reputation (30%); Employer Reputation (20%); Faculty Student Ratio (10%); Faculty Staff with PhD (10%); International Research Network (10%); Citations per Paper (10%); Papers per Faculty (5%) and Web Impact (5%). The strongest indicators for UFSC in this edition were Faculty Staff with PhD (99.8 score), Web Impact (98.7 score) and International Research Network (96.3 score).

The university was also awarded at the QS Higher Ed Summit: Americas 2022, which took place between 22 and 23 September in Vila Velha, Espirito Santo. The conference gathered together higher education leaders and experts to discuss the “Mission-led Universities: elevating higher ed in the Americas”. The event promoted debates, lectures, panel discussions and case studies, in addition to the opportunity to network with the international higher education community and build strategic partnerships. UFSC was awarded in the Research Excellence category and was represented by the acting Prorector for Research, Prof. William Gerson Matias.

SINTER consults UFSC community on internationalization actions

The Office of International Relations (SINTER) addresses UFSC faculty and technical-administrative staff for a consultation aimed at mapping the internationalization activities/actions in progress at the University and understanding the internationalization needs/demands of faculty, technical-administrative staff, and academic and administrative units.

The participation of the university community will help SINTER obtain a broader overview of the ongoing internationalization actions and develop its strategies aligned to UFSC needs and in accordance with the goals set out in the 2020-2024 Institutional Development Plan (PDI).

Internship Vacancy at SINTER – Outgoing Program

There is an internship vacancy open at the Office of International Relations (SINTER).

Students from the following undergraduate programs may apply (exclusively from UFSC):

  • Administration
  • Languages and Literatures
  • International Relations
  • Executive Secretarial Science

Start date: immediately

Total hours per week: 20 hours

Work hours: 1 p.m – 5 p.m.

Remuneration: R$ 787.98 monthly + R$ 220.00  (transportation vouchers)

Requirements:

  • enrollment in the 2nd semester of studies or beyond;
  • no course failure due to unsatisfactory attendance (fi);
  • fluency in English (knowledge of other languages is desirable, but not required);
  • excellent writing skills;
  • ease in operating administrative systems;
  • teamwork skills;
  • organization, responsibility, initiative and punctuality;
  • basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive and Google Forms.

Internship duties:

Assist in administrative tasks related to the Outgoing Exchange Program (serving the university community and the public in general in Portuguese and in English; contacting foreign partner institutions; operating e-mails and administrative systems; issuing documents; updating spreadsheets; etc.)

2023 AUGM Escala Gestores y Administradores – Applications Open

SINTERApplications are open, until 16 October, for the AUGM Escala de Gestores y Administradores program, in accordance with the Call for Applications no. 14/SINTER/2022.

Six places are being offered to technical and administrative staff members from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). One of those is reserved for SINTER’s staff, and the other five are available for staff from other units at UFSC.

International course “The Languages of Science” begins at UFSC

The international course “The Languages of Science” had its first class of the year. Created in 2021, the course is a partnership between the Imagine Project at UFSC and the Collège Sciences et Technologies of the Université de Bordeaux (UB), France. This is the first Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) course offered at UFSC, in a multicultural and interdisciplinary way. The 2022 edition takes place between 13 September and 6 December.

COIL is a cooperative teaching and learning modality between international partner institutions, in which a course is taught simultaneously in both countries. The classrooms of the two universities are connected online and participants can interact in real time, in order to promote a creative, international, intercultural, and innovative environment. In the second semester 2022, sixteen places were offered for each institution (UFSC and UB). The course, addressing the role of science in society, will include topics such as science and democracy, pseudoscience and fake news, taking students on a virtual journey through the scientific world, with all its diversity of areas, cultures, languages and countries.
