SINTER welcomes visit from University of Arizona to reestablish the bilateral cooperation agreement

On Tuesday, 5 November, the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) welcomed the visit of Prof. Dr. Dean Alain-Philippe Durand, Dean of the College of Humanities at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, USA. The meeting, held by the Office of International Relations (SINTER), aimed at discussing the reestablishment of the bilateral cooperation agreement between the institutions which expired this year.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary for International Relations at UFSC, Prof. Dr. Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, and Prof. Dr. Ronaldo Lima, from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (DLLE/CCE), who is the coordinator of the agreement at UFSC. During the visit, they discussed possibilities for academic collaboration and exchange between students and faculty, strengthening UFSC´s international partnership and promoting new opportunities for research and educational development.

The reestablishment of the agreement is intended to expand exchange of knowledge and experiences between universities, contributing to the field of humanities and strengthening UFSC’s international relations.

Consulate-General of Japan visits UFSC and gives lecture on diplomacy and exchange in Japan

On 14 December, the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) welcomed representatives from the Consulate-General of Japan to its main campus in Florianópolis. The meeting took place at the Office of International Relations (SINTER/UFSC) and was attended by the Secretary for International Relations, Professor Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, the International Relations Professor Iara Costa Leite and the student Thomas Placido, a member of the Japanese Studies Center (NEJAP) at UFSC. Representing the consulate were the Vice-Consul of Japan Misaki Shoji and the Consulate’s Cultural Advisor Akemi Ferreira.

At the meeting, they discussed the possibility of furthering UFSC’s cooperation with Japanese universities, especially with regard to scholarships for graduate studies in Japan (Study in Japan). UFSC currently has agreements with three Japanese universities: Fukuoka University, University of Tokyo, and Chukyo University.

In addition to the meeting, representatives of the Consulate-General of Japan gave a lecture on Diplomacy and Exchange in Japan, as well as on the intercultural exchanges between Japan and Brazil. The event, held at the School of Socio-Economic Sciences (CSE) Auditorium on the Trindade Campus, discussed the history and future prospects of Japan-Brazil relations and the demand for intercultural exchange between the two geographically and culturally distant countries.

On 15 December, Professor Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, accompanied by the head of Translation Service at SINTER Luciana Miashiro Lima and the student Thomas Placido, attended the celebration of the 220th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in Brazil, which took place at the Santana Fort in Florianópolis.

SINTER receives visit from representatives of Universidade Técnica Diogo Eugénio Guilande (Mozambique)

On Wednesday, 20 September, the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) received a visit from the leaders of Universidade Técnica Diogo Eugénio Guilande  (UTDEG), a private university located in Maputo, Mozambique.

The Scientific-Pedagogical Director Faizal Carsane and the Director of Administration and Finance Sulemane Seleja were welcomed by the Secretary for International Relations at UFSC, Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho.

Prof. Dr. Faizal Carsane, current Scientific-Pedagogical Director at UTDEG, graduated in Economics from UFSC in 2002.

The purpose of the visit was to establish an international agreement between UTDEG and UFSC, enabling the academic mobility of the university community and other cooperation agreements between the two institutions.

The agenda included a visit to the University Press, a visit to the Socio-Economic School to analyze the possibilities of student and faculty exchange and of conducting joint research, and a visit to the School of Health Sciences to learn about the technologies used in the Dentistry program.

UFSC hosts Chinese delegation from the Zhejiang University International Business School (ZIBS)

As part of the international cooperation agreement negotiated with Zhejiang University International Business School (ZIBS), from China, the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) hosted this Thursday, 22 June, a delegation from the institution on the Florianópolis Campus. The agreement foresees international mobility among students from both institutions and research cooperation. The visit was organized by the Office of International Relations (SINTER) and the Prorectorate for Research and Innovation (PROPESQ), with the support of the Rector’s Office (GR) and the Institute for Studies on China at UFSC (ICHIN).

The delegation from the Chinese university comprised Professor Ben Shenglin, Dean of ZIBS; his wife, Deng Yuhua; the CEO of the company LianLian, Zhu Xiaosong; and the Executive Director and the Partnerships Coordinator of the ZIBS Latin American Center, Rodrigo Moura and Mariana Rodrigues.

They were welcomed at UFSC by the Rector, Irineu Manoel de Souza; the Director of the Rector’s Office, João Luiz Martins; the Head of the Director’s Office, Bernardo Meyer; the Prorector for Research and Innovation, Jacques Mick; the Prorector for Graduate Studies, Werner Kraus Junior; the Prorector for Undergraduate Studies, Dilceane Carraro; the Director of International Relations, Fernanda Leal; the International Agreements Coordinator, Amanda Drehmer; SINTER’s communication assistant, Caroline Finati; Sinter’s translator and interpreter, Paula Michels; and the Institute for Studies on China (ICHIN) Coordinator, Raúl Burgos, accompanied by professors Daniel Martins and Fernando Spanhol and doctoral student Yasmin Lenz.

The group was welcomed by the Rector, who greeted the participants and gave a brief speech in which he presented data about UFSC, qualifying it as a very important university for society, recognized for its quality in the areas of teaching, research, and outreach. The Rector defined the agreement as a very important milestone for UFSC’s internationalization process, bringing opportunities in the area of research and exchanges.

U.S. Consulate General in Porto Alegre visits UFSC for possible agreements with North American universities

On 22 May, members of the U.S. Consulate General in Porto Alegre visited the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Florianópolis.

The Vice-Rector of UFSC, Prof. Joana Passos, and the Secretary for International Relations, Prof. Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, received Cynthia Faby, Public Affairs Officer, and Marianne Scholze Behs, Public Affairs Specialist, at the Rector’s Office. Together, they addressed issues related to possible cooperation between U.S. universities and UFSC. Prof. Pinheiro also presented to the visitors the list of nineteen American universities that already have agreements with UFSC.

During the meeting, the Public Affairs Office and the Vice-Rector recalled the award received by the latter on International Women’s Day in 2022, “it was a very big surprise to be among the seven Brazilian women recognized by the 2022 Brazilian Women Making a Difference award from the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Brazil”, said the Vice-Rector, highlighting that it was an honor for UFSC too.

The cordial meeting with the Consulate opened new possibilities for cooperation and exchange between the North American university communities and UFSC, providing more international opportunities to our students, faculty and staff.
