Registrations open for the “Aspects of academic writing in Brazilian Portuguese: abstract, review and scientific article” course

SINTERRegistrations are again open for the Portuguese as a foreign language course “Aspects of academic writing in Brazilian Portuguese: abstract, review and scientific article” offered by the Institutional Center for Languages and Translation (NILT/SINTER). Registration deadline is 10 July and classes will take place from 15 to 28 July 2022.

The course is being offered to foreign or Brazilian students, researchers and professors who may need an introduction to academic written production in Brazilian Portuguese. The aim is to enable the participants to produce quality academic papers in Brazilian Portuguese, providing them with formal, linguistic and argumentative elements necessary for the writing process.

Course content:

  • Academic genres: abstract, review, article.
  • General characteristics of academic writing: conciseness, clarity, objectivity, impersonality.
  • Strategies to maintain impersonality in academic writing.
  • Textual cohesion and coherence: connectors, modals and anaphoric references.
  • Academic article and its structure: form and content aspects.

The course is structured into three modules, totaling 16 hours, and it has 100 places available.  The classes will be online and the course content and activities will be available on Moodle. To be approved at the end of the course, participants must obtain a minimum grade of 6.0. Participants who complete the mandatory activities with the minimum grade will receive a certificate issued by Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), valid within the Brazilian territory.

UFSC is ranked by the QS World University Rankings

The Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) is among the 1,000 best universities in the world according to the QS World University Rankings 2023. The university continues to be ranked between 801st and 1000th positions, the same as in the previous edition.

Out of the 2,462 institutions that submitted data, 1,422 were ranked by the QS World University Rankings. UFSC is one of the ranked universities for the tenth consecutive time.

The ranking is produced annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British company specialized in education. The evaluation is carried out using six criteria, including Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Faculty/Student Ratio, Citations per Faculty, International Faculty Ratio, and International Student Ratio. Out of these six indicators, Academic Reputation is the strongest indicator for UFSC.
