Angolan King visits UFSC this Tuesday, 31 October

Between 31 October and 2 December, the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) hosts the event 48 anos de Independência de Angola – Quais caminhos e perspectivas seguir? [48 years of Independence of Angola – What paths and perspectives to follow?].

Through seminars, sports activities and celebrations, the event will address cultural, linguistic and historical issues related to Angola. The activities will take place at UFSC and also at the Beatriz de Souza Brito School, at Crescêncio Francisco Mariano Lane, and online on Instagram at @africa.sensation.

King Tchongolola Tchongonga-Ekuikui VI.

Tuesday, 31 October, the event’s opening will receive the illustrious Angolan King Tchongolola Tchongonga-Ekuikui VI, who is considered the monarch of the largest ethnic group in Angola, the Ovimbundu. The event will be held at 7:30 pm in the School of Philosophy and Human Sciences (CFH) Auditorium. The director of the Kadila Institute and representatives from the Embassy of Angola in Brazil, the Consulate General of Angola in Brazil and the Office of International Relations (SINTER) at UFSC will be present.

SINTER participates in the 33rd Annual EAIE Conference and Exhibition

The Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) is present in the  33rd annual EAIE (European Association for International Education) Conference and Exhibition,  which takes place from 26 to 29 September in the city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. UFSC is sharing the FAUBAI (Brazilian Association of International Education) booth with 37 other Brazilian higher education institutions, with the support of the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC).

The Secretary for International Relations at UFSC, Prof. Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho, is representing the institution in what is the largest international education event in Europe. The EAIE Conference brings together universities from all continents and practically from all countries of the world. According to Prof. Machado Filho, this offers a unique opportunity to give visibility to UFSC and to Brazilian higher education in the international scenario.

“The event is a way to give visibility to UFSC and Brazilian higher education, in addition to enabling UFSC to establish contacts, strengthen relations and  create internationalization opportunities for its academic community, as there are universities from all continents in the conference” says the Professor.

On the first day of the event, the FAUBAI booth was visited by the Ambassador of Brazil to the Netherlands, Mr. Fernando Simas Magalhães, who joined the Brazilian representatives for a photo on “Brazil at the EAIE”.

UFSC researcher co-edits recently published book on decolonization in linguistics

“Shades of Decolonial Voices in Linguistics” book cover.

On 12 September 2023, the book “Shades of Decolonial Voices in Linguistics” was published by Multilingual MattersThis is the second volume of the book series Global Forum on Southern Epistemologies, which is concerned primarily with exploring peripheralized ways of framing and conducting language studies in both the Global South and Global North – a concern which is not only epistemological, but also political, educational and social.

The current edition argues that Linguistics as a field of study has been shaped by colonization and needs a critical review. The work was organized by the Director of African Studies at Pennsylvania State University (USA) Sinfree Makoni, in partnership with professor Ashraf Abdelhay from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (Qatar), the Director of Family Literacy at the National Center for Families Learning (USA) Anna Kaiper-Marquez, the PhD student in the Department of Applied Linguistics, research assistant at the Global Virtual Forum and tutor for the KAUST program at Pennsylvania State University (USA) Višnja Milojičić, and the associate professor at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) Cristine Severo.

UFSC is ranked 23rd best university in Latin America and The Caribbean by the QS

The results of the QS World University Rankings: Latin America  & The Caribbean 2024 were published on Wednesday, 13 September, and ranked the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) among the 23 best universities in Latin America. UFSC occupies the 8th position among the Brazilian universities and the 4th among the federal education institutions in Brazil.

The ranking is produced annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British company specialized in education. The ranking analyzed 430 institutions in 25 Latin American and Caribbean countries and at the top of the list is the Universidade de São Paulo (USP). The overall score of each institution is calculated using eight metrics, each with a different weight: Academic Reputation (30%); Employer Reputation (20%); Faculty Student Ratio (10%); Faculty Staff with PhD (10%); International Research Network (10%); Citations per Paper (10%); Papers per Faculty (5%) and Web Impact (5%). The strongest indicators for UFSC in this edition were Faculty Staff with PhD (99.7 score), International Research Network (98.1 score) and Web Impact (97.4 score).

In terms of UFSC articles and external citations between 2017 and 2022, the main theme for UFSC was studies in the Life Sciences & Medicine areas.
